It’s been a pretty maddening summer for just about everybody but one silver lining personally is the publication of a couple stories in different magazines recently. “Plus One” appears in volume 8, #4 of the Woven Tale Press. (www.thewoventalepress.net) It’s a magazine dedicated to both art and writing with some amazing paintings displayed in its pages and I highly recommend you subscribing for free.
“Necessary Detour” won third place in the Spring story contest sponsored by the Hypertext Review (www.hypertextmag.com). This is also a wonderful journal which, in addition to the literary mission, does great work offering storytelling workshops to disadvantaged communities. I strongly urge folks to make a donation or buy a journal which can be done at Roscoe Village Books (www.roscoebooks.com) and a few other indie bookstores in the Chicago area.
Lastly, I’d like to put in a plug for three novels recently released by area writers who deserve alot more attention: “Division” by Patrick Creevy tells the very timely and eloquent story of two neighborhoods, one mostly white and affluent and the other mostly black and poor, how a tragic collision between them ensues and how both take the hard road toward forgiveness. “Alchemy of Glass” by Barbara Barnett tells a fascinating Victorian detective story that authentically weaves 19th century Scotland with Celtic mythology via a journal found in the ruins of an ancient monastery. “Morning Will Come” limns the fracture of a modern Chicago family and its path back to redemption.
